Before coming to Wings Cumbria , Nino* had not had any formal education at all. With careful and consistent support, since he arrived at Wings, he has not missed a single school day.
Nino has been looked after from a very young age. In his previous placements, he would not engage in attending school and he was experiencing behaviour which was very challenging for him, and those supporting him. His relationship with his family had broken down. In these settings, he was very unsettled and made lots of allegations.
He was moved from area to area and eventually was placed in a home with much older children. This made him increasingly vulnerable and Nino was choosing to engage in very risky behaviour. The decision was made to move Nino to Wings Cumbria as having education and care on one site would help him engage positively in going to school, which have proved to be the case.
This young man is doing exceptionally well at Wings Cumbria. He has re-established family connection with a sibling and is loving attending school. His attainment levels in education are increasing all the time and compare very positively from his starting points. He has access to a full multi-disciplinary team to help him understand and regulate his emotions. As a result, he has not made any allegations since coming to Wings.
The consistent routine, peer modelling (attendance is excellent at Wings Cumbria) and structure of the school day and home life means Nino feels safe and therefore better equipped to learn.
He has successfully transitioned from the junior school to senior school (within Wings) in a way which was stable and seamless. He had no stress during the process, which has allowed him to focus on his studies. Looking ahead, he is likely to undertake a full suite of GCSEs.
